20 Of Law Roach's Most Iconic Celeb Looks That Prove His Impact Will Forever Be Cemented In Fashion History
Zendaya's self-proclaimed "image architect," Law Roach, has been the creative genius behind many of her iconic looks, and he recently sent shockwaves through the fashion world by announcing his retirement.
He posted a (now deleted) image of a stamp graphic saying "retired" on his Instagram, with a caption alluding to "the politics, the lies, and false narratives" of Hollywood getting to be too much for his liking.
Needless to say, people began speculating, with a recent clip of him and Zendaya at Paris Fashion Week being on the tip of people's tongues as the ignition for Law's decision.
Law was quick to defend Zendaya, saying they are "forever," describing her as his "little sister" and stating that "it's real love and not the fake industry love."
So y’all really think I’m breaking up with Z….. we are forever!
Since all this kicked off, Law has clarified; he's not retiring from fashion, but he is retiring from the celebrity side of it. In an interview with The Cut, he said: "I am definitely, 100,000 percent retiring. Nobody can say what’s forever and what will happen, but at this moment, and in my mind, I’m definitely retiring from celebrity styling. I’m not retiring from fashion, because I love it so much. But styling, in the way that I’ve been of service to other people, I’m retiring from that."
Talking about his decision to quit while being so successful, he said: "Isn’t it always best to leave when you’re on the top? I think the real reason is that it’s been building for a while because, you know, I looked up one day and honestly realized that I’m not happy.
I haven’t been happy, honestly, in a really long time. And the culmination of everything that’s been happening in my career these last few days kind of just pushed me over the edge. And it’s just like, you know what? I’ve done everything. I’m very grateful that I’ve been able to move and climb in this industry the way I have. But I can’t say that I didn’t do that without suffering. And I think as Black people in this country, it’s embedded in us to suffer, right? We feel like to be successful, we have to suffer. You suffer through things to get to the other side. You know, you suffer through Earth to get to heaven. You know what I mean?
And I think that’s just in our DNA as African Americans, and I’ve been suffering for years, and I woke up, and when I made that post — and shit, it’s like it’s been so long ago, but it was literally the day before yesterday? Monday? I made that post because I felt like I couldn’t breathe and me releasing that, and letting the world know that I’m done with this was the first time that whole week that I really felt like I took a breath, a deep breath.
I don’t wanna suffer no more. I don’t wanna be unhappy. I don’t wanna be at the beck and call of people and their teams. I wanna take some time and figure out, you know, how to live."
So, thankfully, Law seems to be sticking with fashion, but we may not see his looks at red carpet events. In honor of this, let's take a look at some of the beautiful outfits he's created for A-listers over the years.
I tried really hard not to turn this into a Law/Zendaya fan post, but they WORK SO WELL together! But I managed to exercise restraint. Kinda...
VH1
1.Zendaya's Venice Film Festival look
I was OBSESSED with this look! In fact, I still am. Law created three looks for Zendaya's time at the Venice Film Festival back in 2021, and this tan leather Balmain gown with a thigh-high leg slit was my fave. Accessorized with a 93-carat emerald serpentine necklace from Bulgari and slicked back hair, it's certainly one to beat when it comes to delivering wet-look styling with elegance.
2.Hunter Schafer's 2023 Oscars look
Hunter Schafer's bold look is classic with a twist. The long, white, silky skirt is timeless, but paired with nothing but a simple quill on top, the look is elevated from "seen it before" to "let me see that again!"
Schafer's look also has powerful undertones. Designed by Ludovic de Saint Sernin for Ann Demeulemeester, a fashion house with a long history of gender-non-conforming fashion, the quill was designed to represent telling one's own story. As a trans woman constantly subjected to scrutiny on her body and womanhood online, Schafer is baring all and telling her story loud and proud.
3.Lindsay Lohan's 2023 Good Morning America look
This bold look is designed to catch your eye, so it perfectly goes hand-in-hand with Lindsay's return to the world of acting.
From Akris's fall 2022 collection, it combines a turtleneck, blazer, and high-waisted trousers in a geometric red, green, yellow, and orange pattern. Paired with red Giuseppe Zanotti platform heels, there's no way you can miss this colorful ensemble.
4.Priyanka Chopra-Jonas's Bulgari gown in Paris 2022.
Priyanka's black and white gown is just mesmerizing. This Bulgari piece features a black fitted dress with a plunging neckline, and is brought to life by large white ruffles flowing from head to toe. Completed with a thick silver and emerald Bulgari necklace and matching earrings, this look transforms a classic black gown to something truly memorable.
5.Jameela Jamil's 2019 Emmy Awards look
Jameela had a mint moment at the 2019 Emmys thanks to Law. The soft pastel green dress by Monique Lhuillier had an unusual asymmetric bow neckline, flowing into an A line skirt. The color made Jameela glow, despite the fact she'd actually been on a drip two hours earlier thanks to a bad reaction to antibiotics.
Accessorized with David Webb orbit earrings, a statement ring, and a cuff-style bracelet, Jameela finished the look with a pop of coral lipstick.
6.Halsey's If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power outfits
7.Jaime Xie's vintage Balenciaga
8.Lewis Hamilton's 2021 Met Gala look
The combo of the stereotypically masculine, traditional, sharp-cut suit with the feminine, flowing lace shirt with side detail gives this look a real sense of sartorial elegance with a twist.
9.Venus Williams's custom Dolce & Gabbana
10.Kerry Washington's 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards look
11.Jennifer Hudson in Sergio Hudson's Fall/Winter 2021 collection
12.Zendaya's pretty petal look
13.Priyanka Chopra-Jonas's 2021 Billboard Music Awards look
I love this so much! The main color is a nude, muted shade of tan, but the chunky gold accent belt, bejeweled details from head to toe, deep neckline, and thigh-high slit ensures the eyes never gets bored looking at this Dolce & Gabbana number.
14.Anya Taylor-Joy's doll-like SNL look
15.Aldis Hodge's smart-casual pastel pieces
16.Christian Serratos's Jimmy Kimmel Live! look
17.Dominique Thorne's pink mesh showstopper
A little bit Barbie, a little bit Harley Quinn, this Prabal Gurung strapless gown features a corset enrobed in pink, black, and white tulle. Gathered at the hip above a thigh-high slit with sheer black stockings, this look truly is a showstopper!
18.Zendaya's SAG 2023 look
Zendaya, Law and 3D florals are apparently a winning combo, because this custom Valentino gown with 190 rosettes was blooming lovely!
19.Law's own Maison Valentino look
To quote a commenter on his Insta post about this look, "It's the cheekbones and boots for me."
20.And last, but certainly not least, Ariana Grande's 2020 Grammys look
This soft gray gown by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture looks soft enough to sink into and sleep in at the end of a long hard day. Accessorized by satin opera gloves, Ariana's strapless dress featured flowing layers of tulle for a fairytale-esque finish.
