Yahoo Autos 2006 Indy 500 Race Flashback
The Indy 500 is this weekend, so why not catch up on some of the greatest Indy 500s of the past? The 90th Indy 500, held in 2006, had one of the closest and most exciting finishes in the race's 100-plus year history. Luckily, the entire race is available to watch on YouTube for free.
Rookie Marco Andretti, just 19 years old at the time, took the lead from his father Michael with just three laps remaining. He spent the remainder of the race battling with Sam Hornish, Jr., until about 450 feet from the finish line, when Hornish, Jr. slipped past Andretti and took the win at the very last moment. This was the first time in Indy 500 history a pass was made for the lead and victory on the final lap.
The margin of victory was incredibly close, with a difference of just 0.0635 seconds between Hornish, Jr. and Andretti-second only to the finish of 1992's race.
