2013-17 Ford Focus, 2014 Ford Transit Connect recalled: over 75,000 vehicles affected

This morning, Ford issued two recalls affecting more than 75,000 vehicles, most of which are registered in the U.S.

RECALL #1: 2013-17 Ford Focus hatchback and Ford Focus RS
UNITS AFFECTED: 64,038 in the U.S. and 9,877 in Canada

This recall stems from a software glitch that allows hatchbacks to unlock and unlatch with one press of the inside latch release. Federal law requires that such doors unlock and unlatch separately, via two distinct actions.

The bad news is, the unlocking/unlatching can happen even when a vehicle is in motion, which could allow cargo, pets, or anything else to fall out.

The good news is, it only occurs when cars are traveling at 4 mph or slower. At this time, Ford says that it knows of no accidents or injuries linked to the issue.

The recall is limited to hatchback models equipped with manual transmissions, including:

  • 2013-17 Ford Focus vehicles built at Michigan Assembly Plant between February 12, 2012 and August 26, 2016

  • 2016-17 Ford Focus RS vehicles built at Saarlouis Assembly Plant between August 3, 2015 and August 26, 2016

Ford will mail recall notices to the owners of those vehicles asking them to make service appointments with their local dealerships. Dealers will update the Focus' body control module software at no charge.

RECALL #2: 2014 Ford Transit Connect
UNITS AFFECTED: 887 in the U.S., 28 in Canada, and 1,677 registered elsewhere

The Transit Connect is being recalled due to a problem with the bond that attaches the van's panoramic roof to the body of the vehicle. Ford says that the problem can cause excessive wind noise, water leaks, and in extreme cases, it can allow the panel to separate from the vehicle entirely.

If that happens, it obviously poses a major distraction for drivers and a potential obstacle for vehicles traveling behind. Thankfully, Ford has received no reports of injuries or accidents associated with the problem.

The recall is limited to 2014 Transit Connect vehicles built at Valencia Assembly Plant between October 4, 2013 and July 14, 2014. Ford dealers will remove, clean, and reinstall the panoramic roof panel at no charge.
