2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf, Golf SportWagen, GTI, Audi A3 recalled for fuel leak
On Friday, Volkswagen's Audi unit recalled more than 170,000 cars and crossovers to fix potential fuel leaks in those vehicles. As it turns out, another 110,042 VW and Audi cars are affected by a similar recall, which aims to resolve a different problem with their fuel systems.
The recall affects 2015-2016 models of the Volkswagen Golf, Golf SportWagen, and GTI, as well as the Audi A3 sedan and cabriolet. In those vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a problem with a suction pump inside the fuel tank could result in a gas leak.

The faulty component was manufactured by Alfmeier Prazision in Germany. NHTSA explains the problem in greater detail:
"Due to a manufacturing issue, seal rings inside a suction pump in the fuel tank were assembled with too much tension. This could have pre-damaged the seals, potentially leading to fuel ingress into the [Evaporative Emissions] system. Should the EVAP system be flooded, fuel could leak through the charcoal canister filter element."
Obviously, any time there's a fuel leak, there's an increased risk of fire.

As with one of the two recalls we discussed on Friday, Volkswagen doesn't yet have an ample supply of parts to begin repairing affected vehicles. In early November, Volkswagen will mail interim recall notices to owners, followed by a second notice when parts become available. At that time, owners will be able to take their cars to VW and Audi dealers, who will replace the suction pump at no charge.
