Introduction

For the past decade, the Cadillac CTS has been the focal point of the Cadillac brand in terms of sales and visibility. That's changing, with the Cadillac ATS poised to become the most popular car the company sells. At the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Cadillac unveiled the new 2015 ATS Coupe, and based on comments by Bob Ferguson, who runs Cadillac's global operations, the new 2-door is just the start, telling Automotive News that a convertible and a station wagon are under consideration, in addition to a high-performance V-Series variant.

Consider, then, the new 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe as the start of an expansion of the lineup. In summarizing the new ATS Coupe, Uwe Ellinghaus, chief marketing officer, Global Cadillac, said, "It is an exclusively distinctive American alternative, unique in its class, yet delivering a sporty and sophisticated driving experience rivaling the world's best."

Exterior Features

The 2015 ATS Coupe looks like the ATS Sedan, but the devil is, as they say, in the details. The coupe has a wider front and rear track, standard 18-inch wheels, and unique design from the windshield back. The front fenders are modified to accommodate the wider track, and the front fascia is also revised in comparison with the ATS Sedan.

Cadillac says the new 2015 ATS Coupe is the lightest car in its segment, with a 51:49 front-to-rear weight distribution. The first production Cadillac to wear the brand's new wreath-less crest on its grille, the ATS Coupe can be optioned with vertical LED running lights and LED headlights with adaptive forward lighting, as well as illuminating door handles.

Interior Features

The 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe is equipped with the same dashboard as the ATS Sedan, one that can be trimmed with leather, aluminum, wood, or carbon fiber. If you're planning to carry lots of cargo, consider this first: the ATS Coupe features a small 10.4 cu.-ft. trunk.

When the ATS Coupe goes on sale, it will be offered in Standard, Luxury, Performance, and Premium collection trim levels, and to obtain most of the car's appealing features, it's necessary to upgrade to Luxury trim at a minimum. Cadillac's EZ Key passive entry and push-button starting system is, however, standard on all trim levels.

Optional Features

Choose the ATS Coupe in Luxury trim and the car is fitted with a Cadillac User Experience (CUE) touch-screen infotainment system with an 8-inch display screen that covers a hidden, locking storage compartment. Highlights include natural-voice-recognition technology, a new text-to-voice conversion feature that reads incoming text messages over the stereo speakers, new OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, new Siri Eyes Free mode, and access to the new CUE Collection of mobile applications.

In addition to CUE, the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe is available with a navigation system, premium surround-sound audio system, reconfigurable gauge cluster and head-up display, and what the company characterizes as "handcrafted, cut-and-sewn" leather.

Under the Hood

Cadillac ATS Coupe buyers can choose between two engines when buying the car. A turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is standard, generating 272 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter figure representing a 14% increase over the ATS Sedan. With between 90% and 100% of the torque available between 2,100 rpm and 5,400 rpm, the ATS Coupe Turbo can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, according to Cadillac. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed automatic available as an option, each driving the car's rear wheels.

The ATS Coupe's available E85-compatible 3.6-liter V-6 is good for 321 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque, and is offered only with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The ATS Coupe with the optional all-wheel-drive system is available with either engine.

Additional mechanical components include a MacPherson strut front, 5-link rear suspension, variable-effort electric steering, Brembo braking components with automatic drying rotors, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. An optional sport-tuned suspension with Magnetic Ride Control is packaged with a limited-slip differential, high-capacity engine cooling, and summer performance tires.

Safety

In addition to the ATS Coupe's standard safety features, including OnStar Automatic Collision Notification technology, there are two option packages that add a long list of safety-related upgrades.

The Driver Awareness package is equipped with a reversing camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, Intellibeam headlights, forward-collision alert, and lane-departure warning. New for 2015, Cadillac's lane-keep assist technology is also included in this package.

Choose the Driver Assist package for a full-speed-range adaptive cruise control system, Automatic Collision Preparation, Front and Rear Automatic Braking, rear cross-traffic alert, head-up display, and more. This package also contains a new enhanced side blind-zone alert system for 2015.

Technology

In addition to the wide range of technologies available for the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe, this model is also expected to offer GM's new Teen Driver technology. The Teen Driver feature allows parents to set vehicle speed and stereo volume limits, mute the stereo if the seat belts are not in use, and record driving events in order to help ensure young drivers are using the car responsibly.
