2016 Los Angeles Auto Show Preview
What new cars are debuting at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show? According to the show’s organizers, more than 50 global and North American introductions are planned, some of which have already debuted. Based on what we know, and what we think we know, on the pages that follow is what you might expect to see once the show opens to the public on November 18, 2016.
Acura
Officially, Acura will showcase its new interior design direction, a natural follow-up to the Acura Precision Concept that pushed the reset button for the company’s exterior design philosophy. However, with the arrival of a new 2017 Honda CR-V, which forms the basis for Acura’s compact crossover, the company could surprise with a redesigned 2018 RDX.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Hot on the heels of the arrival of the Giulia sedan, Alfa Romeo will introduce a midsize SUV called the Stelvio. It is based on the same platform as the Giulia and is expected to share powertrains with its sedan counterpart.
Honda Civic Si
The drip-drip-drip of Honda Civic models continues, this time around showcasing the new sport-tuned Si variant of the car. It’s been spotted with minimal camouflage in 2-door coupe format, but there is no confirmation that it will also be offered in a 4-door sedan body style. The performance-oriented Civic Type R is coming as a 5-door hatchback.
Hyundai
Hyundai is holding two press conferences in Los Angeles. One pertains to a new technology, and one will introduce a new model. The company recently debuted a replacement for the Azera, which is called the Grandeur in Korea, but the odds-on bet for Los Angeles is a pickup truck called the Santa Cruz. Think El Camino, but with an extended cab and better looks than a Honda Ridgeline.
Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration
Infiniti will show its QX Sport Inspiration concept vehicle, an SUV showcasing the design direction for the next QX50 or QX70. Both of those models are quite old, making them both ripe for replacement.
2018 Jeep Compass
Jeep has already shown photos of the redesigned 2018 Compass, and it represents a massive improvement over the outgoing version. The new Compass slots between the Renegade and Cherokee, and highlights will include a Trailhawk trim level as well as Jeep’s latest Uconnect infotainment technology.
2017 Land Rover Discovery
In a quest to improve fuel economy, Land Rover introduces a new 7-passenger Discovery SUV model to replace the heavy and outdated LR4. Lighter and styled using the same themes as the smaller Discovery Sport, the new 2017 Discovery most certainly would meet Sir Mix-a-Lot’s approval.
2017 Mazda CX-5
Back in 2012, Mazda introduced the 2013 CX-5, a replacement for the compact crossover SUV formerly known as the Tribute. Notable for debuting the company’s “Kodo” design language and SkyActiv fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engines, the CX-5 pointed toward the future of Mazda. Will the completely redesigned 2017 Mazda CX-5 have a similar impact? We shall see.
Mercedes-AMG E63
Already recognized as a technological tour de force, the redesigned Mercedes-Benz E-Class now gets a major performance upgrade in the form of the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S. In S trim it makes 603 horsepower, 627 lb.-ft. of torque, and can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, per Mercedes. Mic, meet drop.
Mercedes-AMG GLE43
Replacing the twin-turbocharged GLE400 in the lineup (the GLE is the renamed M-Class), the Mercedes-AMG GLE43 adds an extra dose of attitude and power to improve the 5-passenger SUV’s performance.
Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster
Slice the roof off of the delectable Mercedes-AMG GT coupe and you’ve got one of the hottest new cars of the year, the AMG GT roadster. Unfortunately, controversial styling choices have the potential to detract from what should be a home run for the three-pointed star.
2017 Mini Cooper Countryman
Redesigned for the 2017 model year, the new Countryman supersedes the latest Clubman as the largest Mini model ever offered. A compact crossover SUV, the Countryman offers seating for 5 people and as much as 47.6 cu. ft. of cargo space.
Nissan
Nissan has confirmed that a new NISMO-tuned version of a model will debut, along with an as-yet-unnamed model. The Frontier pickup truck is long overdue for a complete redesign, and given that the Titan half-ton pickup truck is waiting for its standard V-6 engine (which will be shared with the next Frontier), it’s a good bet that Nissan will use the L.A. show to debut its latest cargo hauler.
Porsche
According to LA Auto Show organizers, Porsche plans more than one global debut in Los Angeles. An updated 2017 Cayenne SUV range is one possibility, perhaps accompanied by a long-rumored SUV expected to slot beneath the Macan. The automaker has also confirmed that it will showcase the redesigned 2017 Panamera range in L.A.
Smart Fortwo Electric Drive
Smart’s 2-seat city car was redesigned for the 2016 model year and in Los Angeles the company will debut an electric version called the Fortwo Electric Drive.
Subaru
Auto show organizers say that Subaru will bring a concept vehicle to L.A., perhaps one that previews the company’s upcoming 7-passenger SUV. However, with the arrival of the redesigned 2017 Impreza, models based upon the same platform and architecture could also debut. They include a new 2018 Crosstrek or a redesigned 2018 WRX.
2018 Toyota C-HR
Originally destined for Scion showrooms, the 2018 Toyota C-HR is a small crossover slotting into the lineup beneath the popular RAV4. Smaller and exuding more style, the new Toyota C-HR has the potential to draw younger buyers into the company’s showrooms.
2018 Volkswagen Atlas
Desperately needed by Volkswagen, and not just because of the “Dieselgate” scandal, the 2018 Atlas is a new family-sized 3-row SUV. Offered with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder or a V-6 engine, the Atlas will be available in a variety of trim levels equipped from basic to luxurious.
Volvo S90 and V90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid?
Based on the same platform and architecture as the XC90 SUV, the new Volvo S90 sedan and V90 station wagon are likely to get the T8 treatment, which means they would supply buyers with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
L.A. Auto Show Dates and Ticket Prices
If you’re in Los Angeles for the Thanksgiving holiday, your visit will overlap with the 2016 L.A. Auto Show. Doors open on November 18, and the show runs through November 27. Ticket prices range from $5 to $30, depending on the day and time.
