2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1: 650 HP, 0 to 60 in 3.5, Yours for $62,000

From Road & Track

When Chevrolet first unveiled the 2017 Camaro ZL1 back in March, it didn't list exact performance figures, but everyone knew it'd be an impressively quick car. When we heard last month that the ZL1 would be rated at a Corvette Z06-matching 650 hp, our expectations were raised even higher. Chevrolet has just released performance figures and pricing for the ZL1, and they don't disappoint.

Lets cut right to the chase here: 0-60 mph arrives in 3.5 seconds, the quarter-mile arrives in 11.4 seconds at 127 mph, and it costs $62,135 for the coupe, and $69,135 for the convertible. Chevrolet says that its performance figures were recorded in a ZL1 coupe with its new 10-speed automatic transmission.

While the ZL1 will be Chevy's unofficial drag strip special, it should handle well on a road course as well. It uses GM's amazing magnetic ride dampers, an electronic rear differential, and sticky Goodyear tires. Chevy says that it can pull 1.02 g around a corner and stop from 60 in 107 feet. That's also thanks to a 220 pound weight reduction compared to the old ZL1.

In addition, Chevrolet released performance figures for the track-ready Camaro 1LE: both the V6 and V8 1LEs don't get a power boost, but they run 0-60 in a quoted 5.2 and 4.2 seconds, respectively. The V8-powered SS 1LE matches the ZL1's figures of 1.02 g of cornering grip and 60-0 mph braking in 107 feet.

The ZL1's closest rival, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, ran 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, per our colleagues at Car and Driver, so Chevrolet is clearly making the most of the ZL1's 650 horsepower. We'll just have to wait and see if and how Ford retaliates.
