2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD rated at 445 hp, 910 lb-ft of torque

On Wednesday, Chevrolet confirmed the whispers: the new heavy-duty Silverado will be available with world-class grunt. When equipped with a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8, the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD and Sierra HD produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque.

For spec hunters, that's less twist than the new 2017 Ford Super Duty's 925 lb-ft, but 5 more horsepower than the Ford. Ram's biggest 3500 makes up to 900 lb-ft and 385 hp and is in an unlikely third place, which we don't expect will stay that way for long,

We won't get into details on the new Duramax—we're saving that for a longer takeout—but we will say that the new Silverado HD's hood intake array are key to the boost in power.

Execs at Chevrolet say that the new figures aren't meant to be the latest salvo in the horsepower/torque wars, rather give truck buyers a little more confidence in towing the loads they're dragging already.

According to Chevrolet, only about 3 percent of haulers use their heavy-duty trucks to tow more than 20,000 pounds—well short of the 30,000-plus ratings on others—and most stay around 10,000 pounds, which is well within the Duramax's wheelhouse.

There are some unintended consequences with the more powerful engine though; Chevrolet says the new Silverado HD with the oil-burner can run up to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds quicker than the last model. Hoo-rah.

Pricing hasn't yet been announced, but we expect the heavy-duty hauler to hit showrooms soon.
