• Introduction

  Honda could not have better timed the redesigned 2017 CR-V. In the past year, small crossover SUVs have become the most popular type of vehicle sold in America, and among them, the CR-V is the best-selling model. A thorough redesign should cement Honda’s lead in the segment, and when the new CR-V goes on sale this winter it will be offered in LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring trim levels.

• Exterior Features

  Design highlights of the new CR-V include a longer wheelbase with reduced rear overhang, sharpened styling, sporty dual exhaust outlets, and standard aluminum wheels. All trim levels include LED running lights, and a new Automatic Shutter Grille System improves aerodynamics and fuel economy, Honda says.

• Interior Features

  Honda claims that the new 2017 CR-V “raises the bar” for refinement and premium features in the small crossover SUV segment. Honda also says the new CR-V offers best-in-class rear-seat legroom and more cargo space than before. Considering that it was already one of the roomiest models in its segment, this makes the CR-V even more family-friendly.

• Optional Features

  Depending on the trim level, the new CR-V is available with a long list of upgrades. They include, but are not limited to, stitched leather seating, wood interior trim accents, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front and rear seats, heated side mirrors, and remote engine starting.
  
  Honda says the new CR-V will be offered with a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, including 4-way lumbar support. The front passenger’s seat will supply available 4-way power adjustment, which means it doesn’t offer a height adjuster, which is an oversight on Honda’s part.
  
  Automatic high-beam LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also available, along with a hands-free power tailgate with foot-operated activation and larger 18-in. aluminum wheels.

• Under the Hood

  The CR-V’s 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine carries over into the base LX trim level, making a reported 184 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque, according to Automotive News.
  
  All other versions of the new CR-V feature a turbocharged, 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine making 190 horsepower and 179 lb.-ft. of torque. Though power ratings between the two engines are nearly equal, the turbocharged engine is expected to deliver better fuel economy combined with more torque lower in the rev range for superior acceleration.
  
  Both engines will employ a continuously variable transmission with Honda G-Shift control logic, and power will be sent to the front wheels. An all-wheel-drive system is optional.
  
  Additional engineering changes include greater ground clearance than the outgoing CR-V, revised suspension tuning for flatter cornering and quicker turn-in, and variable-ratio electric steering.

• Safety

  Honda says the new CR-V uses its next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which is designed to disperse collision energy away from the cabin and to be more effective in crashes with a variety of vehicle types and sizes.
  
  Honda Sensing is now standard for all CR-Vs except for the LX trim level. This suite of driver-assistance and safety technologies includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, Road Departure Mitigation, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow capability.
  
  New features for the CR-V include a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. Honda did not reveal whether or not it will offer its camera-based LaneWatch technology for the CR-V.

• Technology

  A new 7-in. touch-screen infotainment system debuts for the redesigned CR-V and includes a volume knob to make adjustment easier. The system features smartphone-projection technology for Apple and Android devices, voice-control compatibility with systems such as Siri, and smartphone-powered GPS navigation. An integrated navigation system is optional.
  
  Families will be happy to know that Honda supplies rear USB charging ports in the new CR-V.
