    Introduction

The all-new, fifth-generation Discovery will redefine the large SUV, according to Land Rover. It’s a full-size premium vehicle, of which the most noticeable design feature is the stepped roofline, which optimizes headroom for passengers travelling in the third row of seats and accommodates the Discovery’s stadium seating configuration, which positions each row slightly higher than the one in front of it. The new model retains traditional design elements, but adds many technological updates. A limited-run “First Edition” model (only 529 units available in the U.S.) will feature etched map detailing on the aluminum trim for doors and dashboard, special badges, bold color choices, and a comprehensive list of standard equipment. The Discovery is available in three other trims: SE, HSE, and HSE Luxury. A diesel engine is available with the latter two trims.

    Exterior Features

The full-size 2017 Discovery features an aggressive grille and horizontal headlights, and an asymmetric tail. The new Dynamic Design package, available on the HSE and HSE LUX trims, includes gloss black 20-in. wheels, black trim, distinctively designed front and rear bumpers, contrast roof, and integrated tailpipes. White and black are the standard colors, with 16 other colors available at a surcharge. The SE trim features a fixed-glass roof; upper trim levels have a panoramic electric sunroof. The 2017 Discovery’s ground clearance is 11.1 inches, and maximum wading depth is 35.4 inches.

    Interior Features

The 2017 Discovery features 7 full-size adult seats that are instantly configurable from Apple and Android smartphones using remote Intelligent Seat Fold technology. The two rear seats can be replaced with child seats. The interior features 82.7 cu. ft. of cargo space and various storage innovation, plus up to 9 USB ports, 6 120-volt charging points, and an in-car 3G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices. The Dynamic Design Pack adds leather upholstery and sporty steering wheel and pedals.

The optional Land Rover InControl Touch Pro infotainment system includes a 10-in. touch screen positioned high on the center console. This apparatus reduces the number of switches on the center console by one third, Land Rover says. The latest navigation and entertainment technologies include door-to-door navigation, which can share directions to a paired smartphone to give users further directions when they’re traveling on foot. Seamless iOS and Android connectivity combine with a 17-speaker Meridian digital surround system and 3G Wi-Fi to enable online streaming or playing music directly from a connected device.

    Technology

A comprehensive suite of available off-road driving technologies ensures all-terrain capability, according to Land Rover. The automaker’s multi-mode Terrain Response 2 system optimizes various settings, from throttle sensitivity to gear change characteristics, with a rotary controller. Terrain Response 2 can select the optimum setting automatically if drivers are unsure. All-Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) can be programed to maintain a suitable crawl speed, allowing the driver to concentrate solely on steering the vehicle, without the distraction of operating the throttle or brake pedals, when the going is particularly tricky. The feature can also be used from a standstill, when pulling away on slippery, low-traction surfaces. A new aluminum structure, similar to that of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, reduces vehicle weight by more than 1,000 pounds.

Advanced Tow Assist allows drivers to complete potentially difficult reversing maneuvers when towing trailers. The driver guides the trailer into the desired space with the rotary controller for the Terrain Response 2 system, using responsive guidance lines overlaid on the rear-facing camera feed.

The Activity Key wristband simultaneously locks the vehicle and disables the ordinary key, which can be left safely inside. This leaves customers free to engage in sports and other activities without worrying about the security of their vehicle.

Available world-first Intelligent Seat Fold technology allows owners to reconfigure the second- and third-row seats using controls at the rear of the vehicle, the central touch screen, or remotely, via a smartphone app. This lets owners rearrange the seats from inside a store, for example, to allow the vehicle to accommodate bulky purchases.
