2017 Porsche 718 Cayman: Here It Is

From Road & Track

Just four months after the debut of the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster, its hardtop companion, the 718 Cayman has emerged. The 718 Cayman and Cayman S will make their debut at the Bejing Auto Show, and like the roadster, they will receive new turbocharged flat-fours where there was once a naturally aspirated flat-six. The good news is that for the first time ever, the Cayman is actually cheaper than the Boxster.

Since the first Cayman launched in 2005, it's always been more expensive than its roadster counterpart, but it's also been more powerful. Now, each Cayman model is $2100 less than the equivalent Boxster, but power figures are the same across the board. The Cayman gets a 2.0-liter flat-four that makes 300 horsepower, and the S, a 2.5-liter flat-four with 350 horsepower.

The 718 Cayman should be substantially quicker and better handling than the Boxster, since it saves weight in not having a folding soft top. Porsche says 0-60 mph times for the Cayman and Cayman S are 4.5 and 4.0 seconds, respectively, which are 0.4 seconds quicker than the Boxter and Boxster S.

Otherwise, there's not much different between the Boxster and Cayman, as has always been the case. That means the new 718 Cayman gets a much-improved infotainment system, bigger brakes, and a steering rack from the 911 Turbo. Porsche says the 718 Cayman and Cayman S will hit U.S. dealers this November. Price for the 718 Cayman starts at $53,900 while the 718 Cayman S starts at $66,300.

We loved the 718 Boxster S when we drove it earlier this month, so our expectations for the 718 Cayman are pretty high. While we love a drop-top as much as anyone, the lighter, better handling Cayman has been the preferred choice for serious driving enthusiasts. Expect that to be the case with the new 718 Cayman.
