From Road & Track

Last year, Volkswagen showed off a facelifted Golf for the European market, but didn't announce US specs. Now, we've got some info on the US-spec 2018 GTI and Golf R before they make their American debut at the New York Auto Show.

For 2018, all GTI model variants will produce 220 horsepower, regardless of whether or not the Performance Package is ordered, unlike previously, where the base GTI was 10 horsepower short. The Performance Package is still an option for 2018–now, it just consists of a front limited-slip differential and upgraded brakes. Both the six-speed manual and DSG automatic are carried over from last year's GTI.

In Europe, the face-lifted GTI gets an optional Performance Package that provides around 242 horsepower, but we won't be getting that in the states.

It's mostly the same story with the all-wheel drive Golf R too. The European Golf R will make 306 horsepower, while the US-spec version continues with 292 horsepower. European Golf R buyers will also have the option of ordering a Performance Package with brakes from the GTI Clubsport and an Akrapovič exhaust. We will, however, get a new seven-speed DSG transmission, alongside the old six-speed manual.

All 2018 US-spec Golfs, including the GTI and Golf R, will receive new front and rear bumpers, slightly modified looks, and an upgraded infotainment system.

With the GTI and Golf R, it's easy to be disappointed with the absence of a power bump, but frankly, that shouldn't hurt either car. The GTI and Golf R have never been the quickest cars in their class, but are consistently the most well-rounded. As long as the GTI and Golf R maintain their handling finesse and their incredible livability, we'll be happy.
