2018 Honda HR-V Safety and Driver Assistance
Its questionable crash-test scores and lack of active safety technology hold back the HR-V in this section. The standard airbags and easy-to-use LATCH anchors help it make a case for family friendliness.
What’s New for 2018?
Since the HR-V sees no changes to its structure or safety features list for 2018, its safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS will carry over from the 2017 model’s tests.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.
While the HR-V scored 5 stars from NHTSA, the IIHS’s testing revealed that small-overlap and side-impact crashes could result in more damage and possible injury, so the agency gave only “Acceptable” results in those categories.

Installing our rear-facing infant seat in the HR-V’s back seat was a snap. Its LATCH anchor points are enveloped in the seat material, but they’re easy to reach with the seat-base buckles.

Active Safety Features
Those looking for advanced active-safety technology will be left wanting. The Honda LaneWatch system is standard on EX and EX-L Navi trims. When you use the right turn signal, a camera mounted inside the passenger’s sideview mirror projects an image of the right lane onto the infotainment display. Want to see what’s in the left lane when you activate the left turn signal? Look over your shoulder, because LaneWatch only provides a view to the right.
