From Car and Driver

With the gasoline V-6 under its hood, the Grand Cherokee is fuel efficient by SUV standards, and in our testing, its highway fuel-economy estimates held true. The V-8 may have greater towing capacity, but it’s noticeably thirstier. The optional turbo-diesel engine’s fuel efficiency is unknown, as it has yet to be rated by the EPA.

What’s New for 2018?

The EPA has estimated that 2018 Grand Cherokees will earn the same fuel economy figures as their 2017 counterparts shown in the illustrations below. The diesel engine has still not been rated by the EPA.

When compared with the Jeep’s V-6, the Ford Edge and the Kia Sorento actually earn lower EPA ratings despite their front-wheel-drive layouts.

We’ve devised our own fuel-economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the highway. Our procedure entails a 200-mile out-and-back loop on Michigan’s I-94 highway. We maintain a GPS-verified 75 mph and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips.

Our test vehicle was equipped with the 3.6-liter V-6 engine and matched its 25-mpg EPA estimate on our test loop. The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, with its theoretically more efficient turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, returned a disappointing 21 mpg—3 mpg less than the EPA’s estimate.

The Grand Cherokee’s 25-mpg highway fuel-economy result, combined with its large 24.6-gallon fuel tank, gives it the greatest estimated highway-cruising range in this comparison at 620 miles.
