From Car and Driver

The Grand Cherokee’s three engine options provide satisfactory power and capability, and few will be disappointed with its handling. Braking performance is merely acceptable, and other rivals provide a more refined ride.

What’s New for 2018?

Since the Grand Cherokee sees no changes to its engines, suspension, or brakes for 2018, acceleration, handling, and braking performance are expected to remain the same as the vehicles tested below.

Acceleration

The V-6 has a macho throatiness, but it isn’t overtly loud and delivers no coarseness at any point throughout the rev range. The V-8 engine provides quicker acceleration, but it lacks the telltale rumble of an eight-cylinder engine.

Ride, Handling, and Steering

There’s nothing sporty about this utility vehicle. In the Grand Cherokee, rough stretches of pockmarked pavement send shivers through the chassis and into the cabin. The optional air suspension remedies this, as our Trailhawk test vehicle provided a more refined ride. The steering is precise and weighty; the Jeep tracks straight, which makes for laid-back highway cruising.

Braking

Soft in its first couple inches of travel, the Grand Cherokee’s brake pedal firms up quickly, and performance is on par with the rest of the class. In this comparison, only the Kia Sorento managed a sub-180-foot emergency stop from 70 mph.
