Continuing the trend of consistently debuting new versions of its GT supercar, Ford has revealed the GT Carbon Series at SEMA. Almost 40 pounds lighter than the standard GT, it is the lightest GT since the Competition Series model that debuted in 2017. Like the Competition, the Carbon Series is aimed at owners who will take their GTs to the track.

Chief among the weight-saving modifications are carbon-fiber wheels, titanium lug nuts, and a titanium exhaust system, all of which are options on regular GTs. A polycarbonate engine cover with additional vents is new, and the exterior A-pillars and lower-body panels are carbon fiber, too. The dual stripes running down the center of the car are finished in exposed carbon fiber, and an optional accent-color package adds a contrasting stripe down the middle. The accent package also adds color to the mirrors and brake calipers, with the four available hues being silver, orange, red, and blue.

While the Competition model ditched the GT's air conditioning, radio, and infotainment system, the Carbon Series keeps them all in. Apparently, there are enough GT customers who wanted to track their car but also wanted to be able to drive to and from the track in relative comfort, so this model was created for them. (The Carbon Series loses the cupholders and the driver's-side storage bin, though.) To differentiate it from regular GTs, the Carbon Series has a new seat pattern, silver contrast stitching, and a special badge on the dashboard. It also has more exposed carbon fiber on the inside than any other GT, in places like the air vents and center console, another request from customers.

Ford recently announced that production of the GT would be increased to 1350 units, and applications will be re-opened on November 8. Prospective owners whose applications already have been approved can order the Carbon Series now. Ford hasn't said how limited its production of the Carbon Series will be, but they did say that only one "special model" can be built per week-that includes the Heritage Editions.
