What It Is: An all-new version of Mercedes-Benz’s mid-size GLE-class SUV to replace the aging current model that has worn both the ML (M-class) and GLE nameplates since its debut in 2011. Based on what we have gleaned from spy photos and other sources, this artist’s rendering shows what the new GLE could look like as it adopts current Mercedes design cues.

Why It Matters: With thoroughly modernized styling, technology, and mechanicals, the new model will give Mercedes a far more competitive entrant into this cutthroat and profitable space that also includes the BMW X5, which is slated for a redesign soon, and the Audi Q7, named one of our 10Best Trucks and SUVs.

Platform: The new GLE will share its new MHA (Modular High Architecture) with the larger next-generation GLS-class that’s yet to make its debut; both will continue to be built at Mercedes’ plant in Vance, Alabama. The GLE will retain its two-row seating layout, while the GLS will continue to offer three rows.

Powertrain: Mercedes-Benz will offer the new GLE-class with its new inline-six engine, which means that a GLE450 model should be the mainstream offering in the U.S., paralleling the inline-six–powered CLS450. Two different AMG versions should crop up, too, including an AMG GLE53 with the same electrified inline-six setup as the 53 versions of the CLS and E-class and a raucous AMG 63 with the ubiquitous and awesome twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. Rear- and all-wheel-drive versions will be on the menu, while a mandatory side order with all powertrain entrees will be a nine-speed automatic transmission. A plug-in hybrid is also certain to join the lineup to replace the current GLE550e.

Competition: Audi Q7, BMW X5, Lexus RX, Range Rover Sport, Volvo XC90.

Estimated Arrival and Price: The GLE-class will make its debut late this year and go on sale in early 2019. Given the myriad improvements over the current car and the breadth of the one-class-below GLC lineup, an uptick in base price to the mid-$50,000 range wouldn’t be a surprise.
