Subaru aims to keep its aging WRX and WRX STI models relevant by adding a new limited-edition Series.Gray trim for the 2019 model year. As its name implies, the WRX and WRX STI Series.Gray wear a coat of Cool Gray Khaki paint, which is accompanied by black-painted mirrors, black wheels, and black badges. Just 750 WRX Series.Gray and 250 WRX STI Series.Gray sedans will be built.

The former model is based off the $30,380 WRX Premium with a six-speed manual transmission and the $2050 Performance package (Recaro front seats, power driver’s seat, sunroof delete, and high-performance brake pads). The $33,480 WRX Series.Gray, however, also includes such niceties as a proximity key with push-button start and LED headlights and fog lights.

Yes, Subaru has pulled this color-themed trick a few times before, including orange, black, and white special editions of the previous-generation WRX. Given that the current WRX is showing its age-it has been around since 2015-perhaps the inspiration for these special editions was The Picture of Dorian Gray.

For $41,465, the WRX STI Series.Gray sprinkles on additional kit such as silver brake calipers, microsuede seats and steering wheel, and Bilstein dampers. Like its WRX counterpart, the WRX STI Series.Gray also includes Recaro seats and a proximity key with push-button start.

Along with the new Series.Gray limited-edition models, the WRX and WRX STI model lines include a handful of upgrades for the 2019 model year. Priced from $28,080, the 2019 WRX adds $200 to the 2018 model’s starting price. The entry-level model, however, replaces the prior 6.2-inch infotainment screen with a larger 6.5-inch unit. As before, all WRX Premium and Limited trims come standard with a 7.0-inch screen.

The 2019 WRX STI receives more notable changes, though. Thanks to a new intake and exhaust setup cribbed from the 2018 WRX STI Type RA, the STI’s turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four engine now produces a healthy 310 horses-five more than last year. The model also benefits from the Type RA’s revised ECU and stronger pistons, as well as a shorter third-gear ratio in its six-speed manual transmission. Unlike the $49,855 Type RA, though, the 2019 WRX STI starts at a more reasonable $37,480.
