Volkswagen’s redesigned 2019 Jetta compact sedan continues to make value a high priority with a starting price of $19,395, which is $100 less than the 2018 model. It also undercuts the prices of entry for the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla by a few hundred bucks. There’s a fair bit of new equipment on offer, although much of it requires stepping up from the base Jetta S to the more expensive SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium trim levels.
All 2019 Jettas use the same turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine as before, with 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Disappointingly, the base S is the only version offered with a six-speed manual transmission; an eight-speed automatic with an auto stop/start system is standard on all other trims (it costs $800 extra on the S). At least the S comes with 16-inch wheels, LED headlights, a backup camera, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A $450 Driver’s Assistance package adds forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.
Stepping up to the $23,005 Jetta SE adds a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, keyless entry and push-button start, and leatherette seats that are heated up front. The R-Line version, which has a slightly sportier bent, starts at $23,845 and drums up some visual interest thanks to 17-inch dark-gray wheels, bits of black trim, and a different rear bumper, among other tweaks. For $25,265, the Jetta SEL gains rain-sensing wipers, interior ambient lighting, a 10.3-inch Digital Cockpit display for the instrument cluster, a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen, and active-safety features such as lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beams. The Jetta SEL Premium sits at the top of the lineup, and for $27,795 it includes cooled front seats, different 17-inch two-tone wheels, fog lights, and a power driver’s seat with memory.
The only option for the upper trim level is a $495 Cold Weather package with heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield-wiper nozzles, and remote start, which won’t be available until later this year (right about when the cold weather returns). The new Jetta will reach dealerships sometime within the next month or so.
