  • The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado with its optional 3.0-liter turbodiesel Duramax inline-six engine is rated at up to 33 mpg highway by the EPA.

  • That number beats the Ford F-150 diesel by 3 mpg when comparing rear-wheel-drive versions of these pickup trucks.

  • Ram has not yet announced fuel-economy ratings for the new 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel model but the company claims it will "lead the segment on fuel economy."

The new Chevy Silverado with its optional 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six is pushing the envelope for full-size pickup fuel economy. Rated at up to 33 mpg highway by the EPA, it beats out the Ford F-150 diesel (not to mention several smaller mid-size pickups) to claim the top spot in terms of efficiency—for now. Ram also has a new diesel option in the form of the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which hasn't yet been rated by the EPA. Ram claims that this its diesel will be tops in the segment in terms of fuel economy.

The Silverado's highest ratings of 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway are for a rear-wheel-drive models. Chevy says that these ratings apply regardless of cab configuration or bed length; the diesel is optional on both double-cab and crew-cab models. Four-wheel-drive Silverado diesel models drop down to 29 mpg but retain the same city rating. The Ford F-150 Power Stroke diesel's highest ratings are 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway for rear-wheel-drive models and 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for four-wheel-drive models.

We look forward to testing a Silverado diesel on our own 75-mpg highway fuel-economy test to see how it measures up. A crew-cab, four-wheel-drive F-150 diesel—a configuration rated at 25 mpg highway by the EPA—beat its rating and achieved 27 mpg in our test.

Chevrolet says that the first diesel-equipped versions of the 2020 Silverado 1500 will be arriving in dealerships in September.
