UPDATE 2/8/19: Now that Chevrolet has released full specs on its new Silverado HD, we know more about the GMC Sierra HD's powertrains and capabilities, as the two trucks share mechanicals. We've updated this post with more information on the gas V-8 engine and the trucks' towing capacities.

The new 2020 GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickup truck has just crested the horizon, hot on the heels of Chevrolet’s redesigned Silverado HD. As you’d expect, the styling is the biggest differentiator between the two trucks, which is either a good or a bad thing depending on how you feel about the Silverado HD's polarizing new face. The new GMC also introduces a few optional features that are said to help with towing, hauling, and other truck tasks.

As before, the Sierra HD range comprises 2500 and 3500 models and offers myriad bed and cab configurations. Similar to what we've seen with the Silverado HD's various trim levels, the Sierra's different models-which mirror the light-duty Sierra 1500's lineup of SLE, SLT, off-road-oriented AT4, and fully loaded Denali models-all look fairly different from one another.

The Denali has the requisite chrome-laden front grille. The AT4 has bits of dark exterior trim, an off-road suspension setup with Rancho shocks and a locking rear differential, and all-terrain tires. Options include the light-duty Sierra's MultiPro tailgate with a few different positions, a 15-inch head-up display, and a camera system that displays various views of the trailer. It's unclear at this point which of these options will be offered on the Silverado HD and which will be reserved just for the GMC.

As for the Sierra HD's dirty bits, there isn't much variation from the new Silverado HD's powertrain offerings, which include a gasoline V-8 and a turbo-diesel V-8. The diesel is the same 6.6-liter Duramax unit from the current truck, making the same 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque but now mated to an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission to replace the old six-speed. The new gasoline engine, a new 6.6-liter V-8 with direct injection, pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission and makes 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. Payload and towing capacities rise, with a claimed maximum towing capacity of 35,500 pounds with the optional bed-mounted fifth-wheel setup. The GM trucks will still have their work cut out for them beating the new Ram HD trucks, which offer up to 1000 lb-ft of torque, and Ford's F-series Super Duty pickups, which have been revised for 2020.

Pricing isn't available yet, but should be similar to the current Sierra HD, which starts at $39,695. GMC says that the 2020 Sierra HD will go on sale in the second half of this year.
