UPDATE 1/31/19: An exterior teaser image of the new Legacy shows a glimpse at the mostly evolutionary styling of the redesigned sedan. Its LED-accented headlights are a bit more swept-back than before and the greenhouse is less squared-off than its predecessor.

While the Subaru Legacy sedan hasn’t been caught up in the massive sales gains experienced by models such as the Crosstrek, Subaru remains committed to its mid-size sedan. A redesigned version of the Legacy is coming to the Chicago auto show next week, ostensibly with its sights set on the newest crop of mid-sizers such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima-the latter of which now offers all-wheel drive, long a Subaru hallmark.

Subaru so far has only shared a teaser photo of the interior of the new 2020 Legacy that reveals its new vertically oriented touchscreen. We assume this big new screen, which looks to be running an updated version of Subaru's StarLink infotainment software, will be an option on the new car. Otherwise, the new Legacy doesn't seem to make much of an exterior styling departure from the current model, although overall silhouette looks to be a bit more rakish, following the trend of its closest competitors.

What's underneath will be a bigger change. The Legacy will transition to Subaru's newest modular architecture that underpins much of its current lineup, from the Impreza compact all the way up to the Ascent three-row SUV. All-wheel drive will surely be standard equipment, and the base powertrain is likely to be a revised version of the same 2.5-liter flat-four engine in the current car, mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). If Subaru decides to preserve an upgrade engine in the Legacy lineup, we suspect it will toss the current car's flat-six in favor of the newer turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four found in the Ascent.

The arrival of the Legacy at the Chicago auto show next week also means that a new Outback can't be far behind. The significantly more popular Outback, essentially a lifted wagon version of the Legacy sedan, could arrive later this spring, perhaps at the 2019 New York auto show in April.
