Toyota breathed new life into the Corolla nameplate with the latest Corolla hatchback, and now it's the more popular sedan version's turn for a redesign. An all-new 2020 Corolla sedan will officially make its debut on November 15, and we expect it to share its basic mechanicals and styling with the 2019 Corolla hatchback, as shown in the illustration above.

This new model will represent one of the biggest changes in the Corolla's recent history, as it transitions from a dated platform to fully modern underpinnings that are part of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) family. We also expect it will use the same new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 168 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque in the Corolla hatchback-a healthy bump from the current Corolla sedan's standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder, which makes a meager 132 hp and 128 lb-ft.

Expect the Corolla sedan's interior to look much like the hatchback's, a good thing considering that model's noticeable uptick in design and materials. Obviously the two cars will be different aft of the B-pillar, but they will likely use the same exterior design cues.

This new model is coming not a minute too soon for the Corolla, given that the current sedan has been around since the 2014 model year. Although it still sells in big numbers, it has been far surpassed by newer, fresher compact competitors such as the Honda Civic sedan, the Volkswagen Jetta, and the Kia Forte in desirability, fuel economy, and performance.

Toyota will first show the 2020 Corolla to the world on Thursday, November 15, and then the car will make an appearance at the Los Angeles auto show later this month. Look for more information to come on this redesigned car as we get closer to its on-sale date, which should be sometime in 2019.
