From Car and Driver

  • Pricing for the upcoming hatchback version of the Mazda-built Toyota Yaris matches that of its sedan counterpart.

  • The 2020 Yaris hatchback will only be offered in midrange LE and top-spec XLE trims, exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission.

  • Pricing starts at $18,705 for the LE and $19,705 for the XLE.

Toyota has been selling a rebadged version of the Mazda 2 in North America for some time now as the Yaris, and we find it easy to ignore its widemouth-bass grille and wrinkled cheeks (or are those gills?) because of its satisfying driving demeanor. For 2020, a hatchback model will join the sedan, and it won't cost any more than equivalent four-door models, which see very slight price increases.

While the sedan comes standard with a manual transmission and comes in L, LE, and XLE trims, the hatchback will be offered only in the midrange LE and top-spec XLE trim levels and only with a six-speed automatic transmission. The LE hatchback costs $18,705, while upgrading to the XLE costs exactly $1000 more. Toyota will offer both without any available option packages and with only a short list of available accessories.

All Yaris hatchback models come standard with 16-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps, keyless entry with push-button start, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and automated emergency braking. The XLE trim adds faux-leather upholstery, automatic LED headlamps, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, automatic climate control, and rain-sensing wipers.

The hatchback is powered by the same 106-hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine as the sedan and should deliver similar fuel economy; the 2019 sedan with the automatic transmission is rated for 32 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined. If only we could get that Yaris pickup truck green-lit, Toyota's subcompact lineup would be complete. We expect the 2020 Yaris hatchback to hit U.S. Toyota dealers by the end of 2019.
