2022 Ford Maverick Pickup Starts at $20,000 And Gets 40 MPG City

After months of rumors, spy shots, and leaks, Ford has finally revealed its newest entry-level pickup truck, the Maverick. Meant to slot below the Ranger in size, capability, and price, the 2022 Ford Maverick comes with a standard hybrid powertrain and a starting MSRP of just $19,995. No, that's not a typo.

Unlike the Ranger or its bigger sibling, the F-150, the four-door Maverick is built on a unibody architecture instead of a more traditional body-on-frame design. As we suspected, the Maverick is built on the same platform as the Bronco Sport. There's a unique fascia with big headlights up front, and familiar Ford truck styling out back. Look closely and you'll see the bed and cab are a single piece, just like the Hyundai Santa Cruz (and the much larger Honda Ridgeline). It's a handsome design that's not too gaudy.

Under the hood of the 2022 Ford Maverick, buyers will have a choice of two transversely mounted four-cylinder engines. The base motor, a 162-horsepower 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four, is mated to an in-house-designed electric motor and a continuously variable transmission sending power to the front wheels. Combined, the system makes 191 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. Ford estimates this setup is good for an EPA-rated 40 mpg city, with a total range of 500 miles per tank of gas. If it achieves those numbers in the real world, the Maverick will be about as efficient as a Honda Civic.

Buyers looking for a bit more capability can upgrade to a 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder non-hybrid drivetrain. It makes a claimed 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, and sends power to the wheels via an eight-speed torque converter automatic. Front-wheel-drive is standard here too, with all-wheel-drive optional. Upgrading to the EcoBoost engine will cost "roughly" $1100, according to Maverick and Ranger marketing manager Trevor Scott.

No matter which engine you go for, towing capacity comes in at just 2000 pounds. A "4K" tow package, available only with the more powerful EcoBoost engine, doubles that number to 4000 pounds.
