The 2022 GMC Hummer EV marks the return of the Hummer brand. True to form, it's a massive, off-road-focused monolith with blocky features and an intimidating presence. But now it's all-electric, packs 1000 hp, and sprints to 60 in about 3 seconds in Edition 1 guise.

Don't think it's gone soft, though. GMC stresses that the guiding principle of the program was to make the most capable off-road truck ever. To that end, the Hummer rides on 35-inch tires and has a massively adjustable air suspension. So if the standard 10.1 inches of ground clearance isn't enough, an available "Extract Mode" jacks that up to 15.9 inches. That'll get you through two entire feet of standing water and allow you to scale 18-inch verticals, truly absurd stats. For reference, a Wrangler Rubicon has 10.8 inches of ground clearance and the upcoming Bronco with Sasquatch Package has 11.6 inches of daylight below its belly.

To help cope with its massive size off-road—it's wider than a Raptor—GMC will also include four-wheel steering on all 2022 Hummers. Not only will it allow the normal tighter turning circle enabled by four-wheel-steering systems industry-wide, but it'll also feature a "Crab Mode." Enabling this turns all four wheels in the same direction at low speeds, allowing the Hummer to move diagonally.

The insanity doesn't stop there, though. The Hummer's on-road performance is similarly ambitious. For 2022 all Hummers will be the top-tier Edition 1 models, meaning they'll all have massive Ultium battery packs that enable 350 miles of range and 350-kW, 800-volt fast charging to get 100 miles of range in 10 minutes. Charge state is displayed using the massive front light bar. Power output from the tri-Ultium-motor setup is around 1000 hp, with between 1000 and 1100 lb-ft of motor torque. That'll enable a 3-second sprint to 60 using the "Watts to Freedom" launch control system. It not only primes the motors for maximum power, it also uses the Bose speakers to pipe in an aggressive rumble, lowers the truck, and rumbles the seats. It's cartoonish and silly, but that's the point of the Hummer: Nothing is too much, too much is barely enough.

So it goes with technology, too. The Hummer will get the newest generation of GM's incredible Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system. The hands-off system will support automatic lane changes on mapped highways, with over-the-air updates to improve its capabilities. Media is controlled by a gargantuan 13.4-inch display, while the instrument cluster features a massive 12.3-inch screen. You'll be able to use those to cycle through the Hummer's 18 camera viewpoints, including under-body angles for spotter-free off-roading. Rather than a power liftgate, you get a power-opening front trunk with storage compartments for the removable roof panels.

That's right, all 2022 Hummers will be convertibles. Much like a "Freedom Top" Jeep, the Hummer EV will have pop-out panels that enable open-air motoring, possible in part because of the rigidity of the "steel sandwich" battery structure. They also all come with GMC's MultiPro tailgate, a Sierra trick fitted to the Hummer that allows for step, desk, long cargo, and m0re tailgate configurations. The only bed size available for the 2022 Hummer is a five-foot box.

In fact, there's only one configuration you can get on your 2022 Hummer: Edition 1, two-tone with a white lower body and black passenger compartment. Three motors, 350-mile range, four-wheel steering. Future versions will offer less range, SUV body styles, and more color options, but for now you'll have to pony up to get in early. Production of the Edition 1 begins in late 2021 and prices start at $112,595. That makes it the most expensive pickup truck sold in America by far, but by spring 2024 GMC plans to sell a $79,995 version.
