Yahoo Autos 2022 Honda Civic Si Gets a Manual Gearbox With Rev-Matching from the Type R
Honda enthusiasts, we have some great news: The Civic Si is back. New for 2022, the Si is packing updated looks from the new Civic sedan, a turbocharged powertrain making 200 hp, and a standard manual transmission that, for the first time, comes with rev-matching as standard. There are also updates to the chassis, cabin, and suspension to ensure this is the most versatile Si ever to leave Honda's factory floor.
The biggest change for the 2022 Civic Si is in the styling department. Based on the all-new 2022 Civic sedan, there's a new shape with new fascias front and rear that remind us a lot of the bigger Accord. The Si gets unique front and rear bumpers that Honda claims use functional aerodynamic aids to improve performance. There's a front spoiler hidden underneath the nose that's matched to a rear spoiler finished in gloss black mounted atop the trunk lid. That gloss black continues onto the window surrounds and side-view mirror caps. Lighting snobs will be pleased to learn LED headlights and taillights are standard. Those wheels? 18-inch 10-spoke alloys wrapped in all-seasons measuring 235/40R18 or, if you're looking for a bit more performance, optional summers. They shroud brakes with rotors that measure 12.3 inches up front and 11.1 inches in the rear, 1.2 inches and 0.9 inches bigger than the standard car's discs, respectively.
Underneath the hood sits Honda's familiar 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four. Thanks to a new tune it actually makes five less hp than before (200 vs. 205 in the previous Si) and the same peak 192 lb-ft of torque. Now though, the engine maintains its peak power between 6000 rpm and its 6500 rpm redline, and produces that peak torque from 1800 rpm all the way to 5000 rpm. Power gets to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and a helical-type limited-slip differential. Purists will be happy to hear the stick is the only transmission available and comes updated with 10-percent shorter throws and a more rigid shift lever mounting bracket. There's also standard rev-matching lifted from the more hardcore Civic Type R.
The 2022 Civic Si's chassis has been given a thorough going-over by engineers to make sure it's more fun to drive versus the outgoing car, with a wider track, a longer wheelbase, and a 13-percent increase in chassis rigidity. The spring rates are 8-percent stiffer up front and a staggering 54-percent stiffer in the rear compared to the standard Civic, paired to specific dampers, reinforced upper mounts, and thicker sway bars.
Inside the cabin you'll find the standard Civic sedan's same basic layout, upgraded with Si-exclusive two-tone seats, metal-plated pedals, and contrast red stitching on the steering wheel, shifter boot, door panels, and center armrest. A nine-inch infotainment touchscreen comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired to a 12-speaker Bose sound system. For those wondering, yes, there is still a physical volume knob.
Pricing for the 2022 Honda Civic Si has yet to be released; we expect a small increase over the outgoing car's $25,930 MSRP. As for deliveries, expect to see the new Si hit dealerships by the end of 2021.
