  • Honda has given a first glimpse at the 2023 HR-V for the U.S. market.

  • The sketches show the subcompact crossover's basic design but don't reveal much.

  • Honda says the new model will go on sale later this year.

Honda's snowy teaser images for the redesigned 2023 HR-V could easily be mistaken for illustrations on a holiday card, but they're actually our first glimpse at the redesigned small SUV that's set to go on sale in the U.S. later this year.

The new 2023 HR-V will replace the aging current-generation model that has been around since 2014. It appears that it doesn't share a body with the Europe-market HR-V hybrid that was revealed last year, suggesting that the U.S. model will be larger. It could be based on the Civic's platform, which would be a departure from the current model's Fit-based underpinnings.

We're guessing that the HR-V's powertrain will also mirror the latest Civic's, with both the 158-hp naturally aspirated 2.0-liter and 180-hp turbo 1.5-liter inline-four engine options likely. A hybrid could join the lineup, too. Either front- or all-wheel drive will be available, along with a CVT automatic. Any of these combinations will be a welcome upgrade over the outgoing HR-V's underpowered 1.8-liter inline-four with just 141 horsepower.

Look for more details—and some real photos—to come within the next few months as Honda starts to launch the 2023 HR-V in earnest.
