  • The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse adds new carbon-fiber wheels from Carbon Revolution to the options list.

  • These carbon fiber wheels are 37 percent lighter than their aluminum-alloy counterparts.

  • Ford also adds the special blue ember finish to the Mustang Dark Horse.

Nearly a decade ago, Ford sparked headlines by throwing a set of carbon-fiber wheels onto its Mustang GT350R. That special Mustang—and those special wheels—cost a good chunk of change. Since that Mustang, carbon-fiber wheels have become more common, but they’re still far from commonplace and generally sequestered to a special high-performance packages on high-end cars. Now, Ford is bringing the carbon-fiber wheels back for its Mustang Dark Horse edition. The car also gets a special color-shifting finish—another throwback nod.

According to Ford, the wheels have an average weight of 20.1 pounds. For reference, these wheels weigh 37 percent lighter than the standard aluminum alloy wheels. That weight savings doesn’t matter a heckuva lot if you’re just planning on cruising your Dark Horse to work and your local grocery store, but that reduction in unsprung mass should help your high-performance driving endeavors.

These five-spoke wheels are a first for the folks that are manufacturing the wheels. The team at Carbon Revolution is dropping the wheel nuts between the spokes. Historically, these wheels would have the wheel nuts set in a circle, with spokes going outward. Instead, this wheel looks more like a traditional five-spoke performance wheel.

Joining Ford’s Mustang options list is a special finish. Reminiscent of the days of Ford’s mystichrome Mustang finish, Ford is unleashing a new color-shifting paint for the Mustang Dark Horse. Dubbed blue ember, this color shifts from blue to amber depending on the lighting. Ford hasn’t mentioned that this finish will have a production cap, so it might not be as rare as a mystichrome Mustang, but only time will tell.

Regardless, you’ll be able to snag your own Mustang Dark Horse, with or without the carbon fiber wheels or special paint, when it goes on sale this summer. Ford hasn’t said how much the blue ember finish will cost, or the carbon fiber wheels, but you can bet the latter will be a good chunk of change.
