Here's All 23 of Carroll Shelby's Personal Cars Up For Auction Next Month
- 1/23
1927 Ford Model T - $10,000-15,000
This Model T was apparently a gift to Shelby, and it's in good running order today. With only 35 hp on tap, it's probably not the quickest thing here, but it's sure charming.
Bonhams - 2/23
1931 Ford Model A Sport Coupe - $20,000-25,000
Bonhams says that the first car Shelby ever drove was a Model A, though it probably wasn't this one. Still, a handsome thing from the last year of Model A production.
Bonhams - 3/23
1935 Chrysler Airflow $30,000-40,000
Steve McQueen apparently owned this car before Shelby picked it up at auction in 1984. It was one of the first production cars to be developed using a windtunnel, and one of the first with a semi-unitized body.
Bonhams - 4/23
1955 Desoto Firedome - $30,000-40,000
The 330ci V8 in this Desoto Firedome was modified by Shelby's guys for maximum performance.
Bonhams - 5/23
1965 Shelby Cobra 427 (Continuation) - $100,000-125,000
Shelby began making "continuation" Cobras in the 1980s, while this example was built in the late 1990s. It was given to Playboy's Playmate of the year in 1999 before being sold back to Carroll himself.
Bonhams - 6/23
1966 Shelby GT350 Convertible (Continuation) $60,000-80,000
In the early 1980s, Shelby built 12 continuation GT350 Convertibles, and this is the first. It never left Shelby's ownership and it's equipped with a bottle of nitrous for extra fun.
Bonhams - 7/23
1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible - $25,000-30,000
If you wanted to roll in style in the 1960s, this was the car to do it. Built in 1967, it's unclear when Shelby acquired it, but apparently he owned it for a number of years.
Bonhams - 8/23
1968 Shelby GT350 - $80,000-100,000
The 1965/1966s Shelby GT350s are the most iconic, but there's something lovely about a 1968. Especially in this paint scheme.
Bonhams - 9/23
1969 Shelby GT500 - $80,000-100,000
The 1969 Shelby GT500 was the ultimate iteration of Shelby's original Mustang, and it packs a punch with its big 428ci V8. An automatic transmission means this one is meant for the drag strip.
Bonhams - 10/23
1969 Shelby GT500 - $80,000-100,000
No you're not seeing double. This is a different '69 GT500 from the Shelby collection. It's got a manual, so it'd be our pick.
Bonhams - 11/23
1982 Dodge Shelby Charger Prototype - $10,000-15,000
Now, we jump ahead a few years to Shelby's long association with Dodge. This is the first prototype of a Shelby Mopar, and it was owned by the man himself for all its life.
Bonhams - 12/23
1983 De Tomaso Pantera GTS - $80,000-100,000
Carroll Shelby invented the formula of Big American V8 in European Sports-Car chassis, so it's no surprise he owned a De Tomaso Pantera. This is a low-mile GTS example, so it's value beyond its former owner.
Bonhams - 13/23
1983 Dodge Shelby Ram Prototype - $10,000-15,000
If you know your Shelby Mopars, you'll know that there was never a Shelby version of Dodge's full-size Ram pickup. Except, there was one. This one, a prototype from 1983. For its incredible rarity, $15,000 seems like a bargain.
Bonhams - 14/23
1987 De Tomaso Pantera GT5-S - $25,000-35,000
This Pantera was used as a test bed for the original Dodge Viper, which Shelby had a hand in creating. He fit the car with a twin-turbo V8, hoping that engine would go on to power the Viper, but Dodge went with the V10 instead. It's sold today without an engine, so pick it up and install a V8 yourself.
Bonhams - 15/23
1987 Dodge CSX - $10,000-15,000
This heavily modified Dodge Shadow was just one of 750 built in 1987, and it's been in the Shelby collection since new. With a turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder, it offered a damn impressive 175 hp in its day.
Bonhams - 16/23
1987 Dodge Shelby Charger GLH-S $10,000-15,000
With the Dodge Shelby Charger GLH set to end production in 1987, Shelby decided to create a special version to send it off, the GLH-S. Only 1000 were built, and this is the first one.
Bonhams - 17/23
1987 Dodge Shelby Lancer - $5000-10,000
The first of 800 built, this Shelby Lancer was apparently Shelby's daily driver in California. It's also possibly the most affordable car from the collection.
Bonhams - 18/23
1988 Dodge Shelby Dakota Prototype - $10,000-15,000
As the prototype for the Shelby Dakota, this truck has lots of neat features that never made it to production. You've probably noticed that it sits a lot lower than stock.
Bonhams - 19/23
1989 Dodge CSX VNT - $10,000-15,000
The CSX VNT was the final Dodge with Shelby branding, and only 500 were built. It used a Variable Nozzle Turbo with turbine vents that changed shape depending on engine speed.
Bonhams - 20/23
1997 Shelby Aurora Can-Am - $20,000-25,000
An often-forgotten period of Shelby's career was his involvement with Oldsmobile in the late 1990s. He used the brand's V8 for his Series 1 sports car, but he also installed one in this prototype race car. It's the only one in existence, and it looks like it's a track-day bargain.
Bonhams - 21/23
1999 Shelby Series 1 - $100,000-125,000
This car represented Shelby's attempt to recreate the magic of the original Cobra. It didn't quite pan out, with under 250 built, but it's still a neat artifact. This was the first one off the line and it's supercharged for 600 hp.
Bonhams - 22/23
2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR - $50,000-75,000
In the mid-2000s, Shelby reunited with Ford for the Mustang Shelby GT500. This one is the first 2008 GT500KR, and it was given to Shelby for his 85th birthday. With only 150 miles, it's virtually brand new too.
Bonhams - 23/23
2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Super Snake
This 750-hp Super Snake was one of the last Shelbys produced during the man's life. It's a hell of a capstone for a hell of a guy.
Bonhams
There's something for everyone, from rare Shelby Mopar prototypes to a 750-hp GT500.
