Back in the early 1990s, Japan's sports cars took aim at American and European performance legends, and to the world's astonishment, beat them. The most legendary is the Acura NSX, which thoroughly embarrassed the Ferrari 348, but Honda wasn't the only Japanese automaker making big sports car statements. With the 300ZX Twin-Turbo, Nissan looked to dethrone the Corvette - and succeeded.

In this 1990 review, Motorweek found that the Turbo Z was quicker in a straight line than a Z51-package Corvette, and thanks to four-wheel steering, more agile on a road course. Motorweek concedes that the Corvette is friendlier at its limits than the Z, but getting the most out of the Nissan isn't exactly a big challenge.

The Turbo Z worked well on the road too, thanks to its four-wheel steering and two-way adjustable dampers. Wait. You thought only modern performance cars had comfort and sport settings?

This car came at an incredible high point for Nissan, as it was sold alongside the Skyline GT-R in Japan, and the 240SX here in the States. And as Motorweek's review shows, the Z was a key player in a monumental era for Japanese performance cars.

And who could forget the Turbo Z's Ridley Scott-directed commercial?
