From the factory, the Porsche Cayman is one of the best backroad carvers you can buy. The car's mid-engine layout and fantastic capabilities make it the go-to for many enthusiasts looking for that perfect balance without having to spend six figures on a supercar.

This 2008 Cayman, built by Porsche restoration shop Road Scholars in North Carolina, is a little bit different. It's been heavily modified from front to back with wider wheel arches, gigantic 325 section-width tires out back, a GT3 front fascia, a GT3 Cup car suspension, GT3 RS carbon ceramic brakes, and a bored-out 4.2-liter flat-six taken from a 911 Carrera S. The "Cayman GTR," as it's called, is said to make over 400 horsepower to the wheels, though it has yet to be dynoed.

Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire was able to grab a few minutes in the driver's seat of this wide-body Cayman for a taste of how all those mods pan out on a nice twisty road. Spoiler: it's very nice. Watch for yourself to see just how good the Porsche's mid-engine sports car can really be.
