That's precisely what happens in this video taken at a German drag racing event by YouTuber Gumbal. This ratty Golf not only beats the aforementioned R8, but also an ML63 AMG, a Focus ST, an Audi TT, and a Dodge Challenger SRT.
This Golf eschewed its original four-cylinder for a 2.9-liter VR6 with a big turbocharger attached. It sends all of its 600 horsepower through the front wheels via an open differential, as evidenced by its single-wheel burnouts. This doesn't sound like an optimal drag racing setup, but as the video shows, it's seriously effective.
If you see this Golf at the strip, don't even try to beat it.
