  • The ABB FIA Formula E Series is moving its U.S. stop from Portland to Miami in 2015.

  • The 2024-2025 schedule, released Tuesday and featuring a record 17 races in 11 cities, starts this Dec. 7 at São Paulo, Brazil, and makes an encore in Mexico City Jan. 11.

  • Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds said that the United States could possibly get a second race date in the future.

A decade after the ABB FIA Formula E Championship raced around Biscayne Bay in 2015, the global all-electric series will return to Miami for its fifth of 11 stops on the 2025 calendar.

And as CEO Jeff Dodds prepared for the June 29-30 doubleheader at Portland International Raceway that will cap Formula E’s short run in the Pacific Northwest, he said the experience in Oregon “opened our eyes up to the possibilities of using other IndyCar tracks in the U.S.”

He said the April 12, 2025, event at NASCAR-owned Miami-Homestead Speedway offers “a really good circuit well-suited to our style of racing,” along with “candidly, the Miami name that comes with it. The Miami name is a big draw, perhaps a bigger draw than cities such as Portland.”

The race will mark a return trip to Miami for Formula E. The series raced on a downtown street circuit during the series' inaugural 2014-15 season.

Although the Miami ambiance provides more iconic optics for a global TV—audience, Dodds did say the Portland experience—a deviation from the series’ DNA as city-street racing – “was a little bit of a surprise for us. I think it delivered a much better race than we thought it might.”

The GEN3 EVO car, set to be introduced next season, will compete on the road course at the Miami track that is a staple of the NASCAR Cup, Xfinity, and Truck series and has been prominent in CART/IRL/IndyCar, IMSA, USAC Silver Crown, and Trans Am series.

Dodds said Formula E has a handful of “large US cities currently talking to us about putting a race on in their city. So those conversations are live and always ongoing.”

The London-headquartered series, which Dodds said is “growing incredibly quickly, 400 million fans around the world,” discovered that its largely European automakers and sponsors ranks China and North America as priority markets for them.”

The 2024-2025 schedule, released Tuesday and featuring a record 17 races in 11 cities, starts this Dec. 7 at São Paulo, Brazil, and makes an encore in Mexico City Jan. 11.

Dodds said, though, that he believes “our calendar can sustain two races in North America and probably two races in China as the two locations in the world where we could put on two races. So I think what you might find in time is that the North America market is an ‘and’ not an ‘a.’ So we add an additional race location as opposed to continually change out the U.S. locations.”

Dodds hinted at another West Coast location: “I wouldn't write off Los Angeles as a potential venue, but it's not one for season 11.”

The upcoming season will visit Diriyah in Saudi Arabia, stage an historic-first doubleheader at Monaco, and repeat events at Tokyo, Shanghai, and Jakarta before season-closing doubleheaders at Berlin and London.

A location to be determined—thought to be in Britain and awaiting formal contractual clearance—is scheduled for March 8, just before the Miami race. Dodds said, “We've just kind of kept our powder dry until it's all been done and dusted before we put the name out there.”
