The AC Aceca Could Have Been the Shelby Cobra Coupe

From Road & Track

The base for the Shelby Cobra was a small roadster from England called the AC Ace. Before the fender flares and big V8, the Ace was an attractive narrow body car that didn't have a gigantic V8. Alongside the Ace, AC made about 100 coupes called the Aceca. And Carroll Shelby never got his hands on one.

The Aceca was a delicate coupe, and one of the first hatchbacks ever. It's painfully gorgeous. This particular car is a daily driver (what?) with 75,000 miles on the clock. The owner, John Bothwell of PurSang Argentina, says that the car is worth somewhere between $300,000 and $400,000.

John's normal automotive choices are prewar cars, but the Aceca gets a pass because it has the engine from a prewar BMW 328. It's not fast, but it's balanced and drives incredibly with that engine.

The rumor is that there is one Aceca somewhere out there with a V8 under the hood, but nobody knows where it is or if it even exists. Without the V8, the Aceca is more E-Type than Cobra, and it's probably better for it.
