Alfa Romeo announced today that its upcoming Stelvio crossover will start at $42,000, but that's not what we're interested in. Rather, we're fascinated by the Stelvio's estimated 5.4-second 0-60 mph sprint. This 0-60 mph time isn't news, but it's a seriously impressive figure, especially for the base model.

For reference, the Mercedes-Benz GLC300 4Matic and Jaguar F-Pace 25t AWD hit 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, according to their manufacture-quoted times. BMW says its X3 xDrive28i hits 60 in 6.2 seconds, while Audi claims 5.9 seconds for the Q5. If Alfa's estimate is accurate, that means the base Stelvio is more than a half-second quicker than its nearest rival.

Of all its base-model competitors, the Stelvio offers the most power and torque–280 hp and 306 lb-ft. The next closest rival, the Audi Q5, only brings 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque to the party. The Alfa Romeo also benefits from a quick-shifting ZF eight-speed automatic, though it's the same unit used in the BMW and the Jaguar, albeit with different software programming.

A grain of salt is needed here, however. Italian automakers are notorious for quoting optimistic figures in their spec sheets, and the Stelvio being significantly quicker than all its rivals does raise an eyebrow. That said, Alfa quotes a 0-60 mph run of 3.8 seconds for its Giulia Quadrifoglio, while we managed a 3.7 in our own testing.

So then, it sounds like all Alfa Stelvios will be quick–not just the 505-hp Quadrifoglio version. We'll find out for certain when we get behind the wheel.
