Alfa Romeo's Giulia-Based Crossover Could Debut by the End of This Year

From Road & Track

We've known for a while that Alfa Romeo would build an SUV. Sergio Marchionne confirmed it back in 2015. The original report said the SUV would be here this year, but Marchionne then changed that to 2017. Now we're hearing it will go on sale the second quarter of 2017 and that it will be revealed by the end of this year.

Speaking in Italy at a press event for the new Giulia sedan, Alfa head Harald Wester said FCA is already building pre-production versions of the upcoming crossover in its Cassino factory in central Italy, Automotive News reports. While the vehicle has not yet been officially named, rumor has it the Alfa crossover will be called "Stelvio," after the Italian Alpine range. An unofficial, speculative rendering is shown above.

Wester also confirmed the company will build a total of eight vehicles on the Giorgio platform that's set to debut with the Giulia sedan. He also hinted that the platform could accommodate vehicles ranging from a small hatchback to a large sedan.

You can expect the first Giorgio-based vehicle, the Giulia, to go on sale in the U.S. this fall-provided it doesn't encounter any more delays.
