Z8s are rare. BMW made 5703 of their luxury roadsters between 1999 and 2003, most of which were silver. Yet to make some of them even more exclusive (and after finding BMW's version to be way too sporty for this niche), Alpina converted a total of 555 starting in 2002, with 450 destined for the USA in either silver or black.
Alpina went all in, replacing the M5's rev-happy engine with a bored out V8 for maximum low-end torque as step one. Then, they also softened up the suspension, supported by a different tire package. Finally–in the name of effortless cruising–they sent the resulting 381 horses through a sluggish automatic gearbox.
Does the latter ruin the car? Sort of. But does it matter? Frankly, not really.
The Z8 Alpina (and in fact any Z8) looks so stunning even after 17 years that people are willing to fork out over $300,000 for a good example just for the view. Even if secretly, we can all agree that the perfect one would be an Alpina with the BMW's manual box. It's doable.
