EYE ON THE EAGLES | Cassady Becker's historic day leads AU women's lacrosse past Tiffin

The following is a roundup of recent happenings in Ashland University sports.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Wins and records are beginning to pile up for Ashland.

The Eagles (5-7, 4-2) earned their fifth victory in the last seven games with an 18-15 win over Tiffin in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play April 10 at Ferguson Field.

Junior midfielder Cassady Becker set a program single-game standard with six assists and tied the program record with 10 points.

Junior midfielder Natalie Sonntag had five goals, Becker followed with four and junior midfielder Madie Gash recorded a hat trick. Senior Cora Wilson added four assists.

Purple and Gold scrimmage: Ashland University football wraps up spring camp

Sophomore goalie Jillian Rekulak finished with five saves.

On April 8, AU lost 12-10 to Findlay in G-MAC action.

Sonntag, Wilson and Becker each scored two goals for Ashland, and Rekulak made nine saves.

BASEBALL

Crooked numbers in the bottom of the second, fourth, sixth and eighth innings propelled Ashland to a 12-5 victory over Gannon — its 10th win in the last 12 games — on April 12 at Donges Field.

Freshman second baseman Ian Sanders went 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Eagles (19-10). Senior designated hitter Tim Zeller went 3 for 5 with a double, triple and three RBIs, while senior center fielder Sebastian Fabik slashed three hits.

Senior right-hander Joel Ciccarelli (3-0) tossed 1⅔ scoreless innings to earn the win in relief.

AU split a G-MAC doubleheader with Malone on April 10 in Canton, losing the opener 6-5 and winning the nightcap 5-1.

Zeller and Fabik each had two hits to lead the Eagles in the first game.

Senior first baseman Micah Allen led the way in the second game with a double, home run and three RBIs. Senior shortstop Austin Eifrid, senior catcher Seth Schroeder and sophomore third baseman Devin Hukill all added two hits.

Senior righty Jacob Harsany (5-1) picked up the win, allowing five hits, an unearned run and four walks while striking out eight in 6⅔ innings. He was named G-MAC Pitcher of the Week on April 11.

On April 9, Ashland defeated Malone 7-2.

Sophomore left-hander Adam Schomburg earned the win in relief, striking out two in 3⅓ scoreless innings. Ciccarelli recorded the save, ending the game with 1⅔ hitless innings.

Eifrid went 4 for 5 with an RBI and two stolen bases, and Sanders was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.

MEN’S TENNIS

Ashland lost 4-3 to Southern Indiana in a nonconference road match on April 10.

The Eagles won three of six singles matchups — senior Stuart Brdicka at No. 1 (6-0, 6-4), freshman William Rassat at No. 2 (6-3, 6-4) and sophomore Omar Prince at No. 6 (6-4, 4-6, 10-6). Brdicka and classmate Jordan Phelps earned AU's lone doubles win at No. 1 (6-2).

On April 9, AU cruised to a 5-0 road win over Kentucky Wesleyan in G-MAC action.

Ashland's four singles victories came from Rassat at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2), Phelps at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0), senior Tche Kun Teng at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2) and freshman Fabian Bussard at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0).

The Eagles earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches — Brdicka and Phelps at No. 1 (6-0), Bussard and Prince at No. 2 (7-5) and Rassat and Teng at No. 3 (6-1).

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Ashland competed at the John Homon Open at Mount Union on April 7.

AU sophomore Noah Koch had an improved provisional mark in the men’s discus. His winning distance of 58.03 meters/190-feet-4 moved him into the No. 1 spot in NCAA Division II. He was named G-MAC Field Athlete of the Week on April 11.

Earning new provisional marks were senior Trevor Bassitt in the men's 100 meters (10.53 seconds), freshman Sydney Koker in the women's high jump (1.70/5-7) and the men's 4x100 relay of senior Aaron Banks, senior Keshun Jones, sophomore Doniven Jackson and senior Tim Rumas (41.03).

Finishing first for AU were senior Rachel Miller in the women's 400 hurdles (1:01.76), senior Cameron Shifflet in the men's 400 hurdles (54.47), freshman Declan Rohr in the men's pole vault (4.48/14-8¼), the men's 4x400 relay of senior Ryan Rager, freshman Colin Roberts, freshman Ethan Schuster and senior Channing Phillips (3:20.84), the women's 4x100 relay of senior Cheyanne Davis, junior Morgan Dennis, Miller and sophomore Alena Williams (47.64) and the women's 4x400 of Davis, junior Macy Creamer, freshman Mia Gardner and Miller (3:55.33).

WOMEN’S GOLF

Ashland finished eighth in the 15-team field at Walsh's Cav Classic on April 12.

The Eagles, who were led by three freshmen, ended the tournament at 324-323—647.

Grace Grant finished tied for 13th at 79-75—154, Samantha Webb tied for 36th at 81-83—164 and Emma Conway tied for 41st at 81-84—165.

SOFTBALL

Playing for the first time in a week, Ashland played a G-MAC doubleheader at Ursuline on April 10, losing 10-2 and 11-0.

Sophomore shortstop Jordyn Severns went 2 for 3 with a double in the first game, while junior Lauren McMillin and senior catcher Gabie Krueger both drove in a run.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Ashland fell 5-2 to Southern Indiana in a nonconference road match on April 10.

Winning singles matches for AU were senior Huntyr Lake at No. 3 (6-1, 6-3) and freshman Claudia Adcock at No. 4 (6-4, 6-3). The Eagles also had a doubles victory — senior Gabriella Hudec and Adcock at No. 2 (6-3).

On April 9, Ashland earned a dominating 7-0 G-MAC road win over Kentucky Wesleyan.

Eagles singles wins were collected by Hudec at No. 1 (6-1, 6-2), sophomore Kortney Reed at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4), Lake at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2), senior Lydia Bice at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1) and freshmen Alice Adin and Josie Gorges at No. 5 and 6, respectively (forfeits).

Doubles wins came from Reed and Lake at No. 1 (6-2) and Hudec and Adcock at No. 2 (6-1).
