Yahoo Autos A '68 Camaro SS Shouldn't Keep Up With Can Am Cars
Throwing Chevy big blocks in the middle of lightweight prototypes has always been the way to make something insanely fast. From the mid-sixties on, it was Lola T70 Chevrolets, McLaren M1Bs and M6As competing against the best Ford could offer, which, of course, was the GT40. But what if you ended up with the big block in front of you, driving a 1968 Camaro SS against Can Am cars?
In period, Chevy's 396 cubic inch engines were underrated at 375 horsepower. Needless to say, the racing versions produced a lot more than that, but probably not nearly as much as what British GT driver Oliver Bryant's motor can push out today. Watching his #29 "Sunray DX Super Sport" roar at P4 overall at the third quarter of the Sebring Classic 12 Hours is proof that despite the looks, there's nothing vintage about the speeds involved in vintage racing.
