What It's Like to Drive a Ferrari Testarossa

From Road & Track

Starting in 1984, Ferrari built 7177 Testarossas before upgrading the platform to 512 TR specification in 1991. But among vintage Ferraris, the Testarossa went under-appreciated for many years, for two main reasons: An F40 is faster, rarer and more exciting, and a Testarossa is a real pain to work on. Because no matter how practical Ferrari's ultimate GT is (in warm weather), it must also be said that the 4.9 flat-12 has to come out for almost every maintenance job. That's an expensive hobby to have, even without considering how much Ferrari charges for parts.

The other problem is that since most Tastarossas were kept in storage for years, their seals and hoses have likely deteriorated, which means low-mileage examples can pack quite a few nasty surprises.

Hop into a well-kept Testarossa, though, and all will be well in your world. The 12-cylinder engine likes to sing, the Italian leather is perfect - somehow, even the carphone works. And Pininfarina's classic styling makes sure you rule the scenery, no matter where you drive. This comically wide Ferrari is a true icon for all the right reasons.
