Yesterday, we told you BMW silently stopped building the two-door 6-Series coupe earlier this year to make way for the eventual arrival of the revived 8-Series. Apparently, the car seen here testing at the Nurburgring is BMW's next-generation 6-Series, which as you can probably tell, isn't a coupe. And no, it's not even a four-door "coupe" like the 6-Series Gran Coupe that's still in production, not close.

We reported last year that BMW doesn't have a direct replacement for today's 6er line, but the 6-Series nameplate isn't yet ready to die. BMW will reportedly call its successor to the 5-Series GT, the 6-Series GT.

We know. We're a little confused too.

In any case, the car seen testing in this video looks respectably quick around the Nürburgring, and it even manages to catch a little oversteer on corner entry at one point. Hopefully, the production car ends up being this playful.

Still, we sort of hope that BMW won't use the 6-Series name for this car. The 6er was, at one point, one of BMW's most beautiful cars and a direct descendant of one of its greatest, the E9 coupe. The 6-Series name applied to a sedan-based five-door hatchback just feels weird.
