Alabama-based tuner Audi Performance and Racing, better known as APR, made its name by turning up the wick on Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen vehicles, and this Volkswagen Golf RLMS is just the latest model to benefit from its two decades of experience. Based on the already capable 2018 Volkswagen Golf R, the Golf RLMS features nearly double the horsepower and a host of suspension, styling, and safety features that conspire to provide an the ultimate Golf R experience.

For starters, APR treated the stock 2.0-liter engine to its Stage III treatment, which includes a twin-scroll Borg-Warner turbocharger, an ECU upgrade, and specific fuel injectors, fuel pump, and carbon-fiber intake intercooler, plus a custom APR downpipe and exhaust. Rated at 536 horsepower and 474 lb-ft of torque (244 more ponies than stock, but who's counting?), it's capable of launching the Golf through the quarter-mile in a claimed 10.0 seconds and racing to 140 mph a staggering 15 seconds quicker than a stock Golf R. Over a year and a half in development, the APR Stage III setup leaves few scraps on the table.

The suspension benefits from a laundry list of APR products, including a Roll-Control racing coil-over system, Roll-Control stabilizer bars, and custom two-piece APR wheels wearing Toyo tires. A custom roll cage lines the interior, and racing buckets with the requisite ARP embroidery on their backs have OMP racing harnesses to keep the occupants safely nestled. A fire-suppression system provides an additional layer of security.

APR borrowed heavily from the aesthetics of the touring-car racing series for the exterior mods; the Golf RLMS's wide-body kit and an adjustable rear wing and aggressive front splitter all strive for that trademark TCR look.

After its debut at the 2018 SEMA show, the Golf RLMS is scheduled to head out on a nationwide tour, where it will participate in track days to exhibit the capabilities of a heavily modified APR vehicle.
