Yahoo Autos Aston Martin's New Hypercar Engine Will Have a Ludicrously High Redline
The Aston Martin AM-RB 001 is unlike any hypercar ever made. It's far more advanced than the Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918, or even the McLaren P1, and that's largely because Aston Martin is collaborating with Red Bull to build a car that's as close to a road-going F1 car as possible.
One area we'll see that F1 influence is in the engine bay, where if the latest report is accurate, Aston Martin plans to stick the highest-revving engine ever put into a production road car. The Drive recently sat down with Marek Reichman, Aston Martin's chief creative officer, and in that conversation, Reichman revealed that the AM-RB 001's naturally aspirated V12 will rev to 11,000 rpm. 11,000 rpm!
Using the term "car" loosely here, the closest any production road car has ever gotten to that number is the Ariel Atom 500, a vehicle powered by two Hayabusa engines joined at the crank to create a Franken-engine capable of revving to 10,500 rpm. Even the ultra-high-revving Ferrari LaFerrari tops out at 9250 rpm.
If Aston Martin really does build a car with an engine that revs all the way up to 11,000 rpm, that would be insane.
"We may be saying farewell to this kind of powertrain, so we plan to produce the best of the species," Reichman told The Drive.
It sounds like Aston Martin's on the right track.
