From Car and Driver

  • Audi is discontinuing the convertible variant of the A3; 2019 will be the final model year.

  • The sedan soldiers on for 2020 and the Audi TT and TT S Roadsters will serve as the smallest convertibles in the lineup.

  • The announcement comes at peak top-down motoring season for most of the country.

Fans of small Audi convertibles will soon have fewer options: A company rep told us that the A3 Cabriolet is getting the axe for 2020. The announcement comes right at the peak of convertible season, so if you've been eyeballing a shiny new A3 softtop at your local dealer, now's the time to pull the trigger.

We've praised the A3 Cabriolet for its sprightly performance, premium amenities, and polished build quality, but it's never been a volume seller for the German automaker. The sedan stays on as the entry-level anchor for the four-ringed brand and small convertible aficionados will still be able to cop a TT or TT S Roadster in 2020.

Audi has found more takers for its slightly larger A5 Cabriolet, so the decision to end A3 Cabriolet production isn't altogether surprising. To cope with the news, we'll be reminiscing about the few times we were able to enjoy a test drive in the A3 Cabriolet, including the time Audi cruelly sent us one in the dead of a Michigan winter.
