Audi is recalling 342,867 cars for electric coolant pumps that can fail and potentially start a fire, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Included are all four-cylinder versions of the 2013–2017 A5 and Q5, the 2012–2015 A6, and the 2013–2016 A4 and A4 Allroad. The coolant pumps, when blocked by road debris or in contact with moisture, can overheat or short-circuit, which can cause a fire under the hood.

This is the second time Audi has addressed this problem. The first recall in January 2017 applied software updates that would shut off the coolant pump if it began overheating after initial reports of “smoldering” during 2015 and 2016, but these updates did not work. Audi took until the end of March this year to determine it should redesign and replace all the coolant pumps. The new pumps have a “pressure compensation element to avoid moisture accumulation.”
