Award-Winning Filmmaker Christopher Nolan Loves Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift

Christopher Nolan has made a big name for himself directing intense movies like Dunkirk, Inception, and three superhero flicks starting with Batman Begins in 2005. The London-born filmmaker created a breakout hit with psychological thriller Memento and has been steadily collecting accolades, including a Golden Globe Best Director award for last year’s Oppenheimer.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Nolan is an action movie snob. This week, he told The Late Show host Stephen Colbert that he has “no guilt” about being a fan of the Fast & Furious franchise. Colbert admitted that he had never seen any of them and invited Nolan to watch all of them in a row.

“I watch those movies all the time; I love them,” Nolan said. However, he didn’t endorse watching every single one in succession. Instead, he recommended starting with The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and watching that as a standalone story.

Nolan has excellent taste. Indeed, the Justin Lin-directed F&F movie is, in my opinion, the best of the entire set. Watch it again and look for Toshi Hayama at the beginning of the initial garage scene, who consulted with Lin on the drifting scenes (of which there are many).
