Yahoo Autos You Better Buy the Lovely Audi S5 Sportback Or Else the Crossovers Win
Earlier this year, Audi hinted that it would bring a five-door hatchback version of the A5 and S5, dubbed the Sportback, to the U.S., but it didn't confirm it. Now though, the A7's younger sibling is officially U.S.-bound, and it looks like the best choice in the A5 range.
Automotive News reports that Audi president Scott Keogh confirmed the A5 and S5 Sportback's U.S. arrival at an LA Auto Show Party Tuesday. Keogh thinks the Sportback will be a hit, even though Americans are shunning all sedans in favor of SUVs.
"We know, yes the market is declining but it's still a big one and we can get more share," said Keogh. "What's needed are these types of more emotional products."
Mechanically, the A5 and S5 Sportback are largely the same as the A4 and S4 they share their platforms with, but offer a lot more style. Given the very subdued looks of the standard A4 sedan, Audi is wise to offer something more rakish that doesn't sacrifice practicality like a traditional coupe.
Initially, the Sportback will come to the U.S. with two engine choices, a 252-hp four-cylinder in the A5, and a 355-hp V6 in the S5. Hopefully an RS5 Sportback is on its way as well.
Audi is known for depriving Americans of the chance to buy its coolest models in the U.S., but the Sportback signals this could be changing. We're happy the Sportback is coming, but is it too much to ask for an RS6 Avant?
