2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 crash on track triggers confused OnStar call

Every chance we've had to drive the 2014 Chevy Camaro Z28 has left us impressed both by its racing prowess — 505 hp, 300 hp lighter than a ZL1, barely street-legal tires — and the potential for making a mess of things when the going gets fast. Last weekend, one of the first Z/28s in customer hands had its speed debut at Road America cut short by a crash, one that was slightly less embarrassing for the driver than for the befuddled OnStar operator who called while the car was still on the track.

The wheelman, Ken Thwaits, is no novice. A long-time racer and owner of a sports marketing firm, Thwaits brought his Lingenfelter-tuned Z/28 to Road America as part of an Ultimate Street Car Association event. According to Bangshift, Thwaits was busy setting the fastest lap in a time-attack race when the Z/28 lost traction and slid into a wall.

And being a mostly stock 2014 Chevy, the impact set off the vehicle's crash sensors and an automatic call to OnStar.

Thwaits wasn't injured, and the wreck wasn't nearly enough to total the Z/28, and it looks like Thwaits will be back on track soon, safe in the knowledge that if he needs directions or gets his keys locked in the car, OnStar will be there.
