Zagato marks its 95th birthday with one-off Lamborghini 5-95 creation

Zagato marks its 95th birthday with one-off Lamborghini 5-95 creation

Back in 1965, Italian coachbuilder Zagato formed a partnership with Lamborghini as it developed a pair of 350 GTZs, based on the production 350 GT, for former F1 driver Marquis Gerino Gerini. Since then, the pair have birthed several other creations, with the most recent one in celebration of Zagato's 95th birthday revealed this past Saturday: The Lamborghini 5-95.

The 5-95 Zagato debuted at this year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at Lake Como in Italy. It's a one-off creation built specifically for noted car collector Alberto Spies, based on the best-selling Lamborghini Gallardo. As the owner of multiple Zagato masterpieces, such as an '85 Aston Martin V-8 Zagato, its 2012 V-12 counterpart and a 1990 Alfa Romeo S.Z., Spies calls the 5-95 a "fundamental piece of my collection."

Under the hood sits the same 5.2-liter V-10 from the Gallardo 570-4, meaning a 60-mph sprint should occur in around 3.0 seconds. Its looks portray many similarities to the Diablo-based Lamborghini Raptor Zagato from 1996, only its face looks like a hungry carp. While I'm not a fish fan, the back of the car appears butcher, reminiscent, in a way, of the Hennessey Venom GT, which in itself is a reworked Lotus Elise. Zagato says it recalls an "animal's muscles as it is ready to leap forward." Personally, I think it's a tad disjointed.

The video below offers us a closer look at the car, as well as a brief glimpse into its V-10 rumble. It might be less seductive than the original 350 GTZ, but as with all Zagatos, with the 5-95 Spies has bought himself another piece of history.
